It is one of life’s simple, primal pleasures/rituals at the beginning or end of a day: filling the basin with warm water, lathering that luxurious bar of soap and washing your face.
I have washed my face with a version of our gentle true handmade food soap for 50 years (first my grandmother’s home made one, now tweaked and made again for Beauty and the Bees) and one look at my skin age 61 (I do not wear “foundation”- no need to) tells you that all the bull dust about not washing your face is just that.
BUT: it has been demonised as bad for your skin for as long as I can remember and it is all true, IF you use harsh chemical supermarket commercial soap, facial wash foaming detergent liquids. Why? The PH is too high, too harsh and TOO drying. These cleansers draw moisture from the skin creating dead, dry skin cell build up.
Let me share with you the typical drying chemical “soap” commercial bar ingredients:
Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Stearic Acid, Sodium Tallowate Or Sodium Palmitate, Lauric Acid, Sodium Isethionate, Water, Sodium Stearate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoate Or Sodium Palm Kernelate, Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, Tetrasodium Edta, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891)
Here is the ingredient list for a typical foaming facial wash:
Water (Aqua), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Lauric Acid, Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate, Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil or Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, DMDM Hydantoin, Stearic Acid, Fragrance (Parfum), Citric Acid, BHT, Tetrasodium EDTA, Methylisothiazolinone, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate.
They are simply chemical soups!!!
Now, let’s look at gentle handmade bar (PH neutral at around 7) ingredients:
Coconut and olive oils, soy wax, Leatherwood beeswax and honey, essential oils, (if bar is scented) seaweed extract. That’s it: all gentle moisturising plant oils chosen for their soothing moisturising, nourishing qualities and their ability to produce silky, creamy gentle lather that cleans effectively yet does not strip the skin.
So dear people – learn how to wash you face properly and with the right products: this is the single thing that people do incorrectly and is SO important.
