Jill’s FIVE top tips to improve dry, sensitive skin
We GET sensitive and dry skin; in fact Beauty and the Bees was founded on the fact that founder Jill Saunders couldn’t use any mainstream commercial skincare products and so began to make her own with 100% natural food and plant ingredients.
Do you struggle with your skincare? Jill has some GREAT advice just for you.
Beauty and the Bees was founded on the fact that I could not use any mainstream commercial skincare products. They reddened and made my skin burn and sting… even the nasty bar water from my shower in London burned my skin!
I knew there had to be a better way, so I made my own with safe food ingredients that would soothe rather than sting!
In general, sensitive skin is characterised by a tendency to become easily inflamed or irritated. Here are a few tell-tale signs that you might recognise:
- Is your skin feeling tight or uncomfortable after washing your face? (we know: that’s why we make olive oil rich soaps)
- Is your skin feeling uncomfortable with most mainstream skincare products? (We know how that feels!)
- Does your skin reacts adversely to chemical and artificial coloured products? (yep: that’s why we use only food ingredients!)
- Are you suffering from premature wrinkles and fine lines? (water based moisture creams do nothing that’s why we use rich oils and waxes)
- Is your skin itchy, or have flaky dry patches? (We understand: our moisture creams will fix that!)
I believe that sensitive skin frankly does not exist per se: it is simply the onslaught of the nasty chemical-laden products that cause these reactions, along with wind, pollutants and not using gentle unscented and detergent free products. That’s why we make a whole range!
Our top 5 tips to care for dry sensitive skin
1 Gently cleanse your skin
Dump the heavily synthetically scented detergent washes that strip the skin! Why? Because they strip the skin’s natural essential lubricating oils from the skin and leaves sensitive skin vulnerable to a host of allergens, irritants, and are very drying.
Try a gentle natural moisturising soap like our Udderly Yogurt, Wild Jojoba, Honey and Olive Moisture cream bar (grab these products for 15% off here) blot the skin dry with a towel, no rubbing, and rinse well.
Watch our video here on how to wash your face properly.
Don’t over exfoliate: it can cause redness and irritation: try our wonderfully gentle new Konjac sponges for everyday super gentle cleansing and exfoliation.
Once a week, our creamy Seaweed Honey and Herb Polishing Grains are super soothing with oatmeal. Stick with lukewarm water on the face especially in the shower: steaming hot is a sure-fire aggravator and dries the skin. Apply your moisture cream immediately after washing!
2 Patch test new products.
We have always recommended this even with our super gentle products: a great precautionary measure, apply a small amount to a small area of skin, in the crook of the elbow, behind the ear, or other inconspicuous area on the body. Try this for a week to be sure before full application.
3 Moisturise with a vengeance!!
Sensitive dry skin is even more vulnerable to the elements, and water based products (99% of brands are water based because quality oils and waxes are costly) but ours are super rich in natural oils instead so last over 12 hours on the skin to really moisturise effectively.
It is super important to choose an oil based moisture cream like our range that REALLY protects against water loss and maintains a long-lasting barrier from environmental factors, including pollution and wind.
Honey is also a humectant that draws moisture to the skin!
Moisturise both morning and night – as soon as you towel dry your skin to trap remaining moisture in, to knock dry sensitive skin on the head!
4 Avoid synthetically scented/coloured products
Synthetic Fragrances in synthetic commercial products like moisturizers and soaps are the main cause of irritation for people with sensitive skin. The label “Unscented” is meaningless: generally, means that fragrances were used to neutralize the odours of chemical ingredients. Colours are there to please the eye but simply increase sensitivity potential.
Our unscented products are just that, we mean exactly what we say: no essential oils, which can irritate just as much, simply gentle natural oils and butter to soothe, which smell like the oils themselves: no masking needed!
5 Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate!
Internally and externally. Drink 2 litres of water every day: starting the day with 500 ml of warm water kick starts the system and removes toxins. Keep a mister in your handbag/on your desk and fill with boiled and cooled tap water or a herbal infusion…mint is cooling and refreshing. Mist your face every few hours especially in dry heated winter environments.
