If we all did the things we are really capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.
― Thomas A. Edison
Do you ever find yourself filled with self-doubt? Did you ever hear that statement “You have so much potential, if only …”? Do you feel you need to be perfect at something before you can go ahead and do it? Does your inner voice criticise and undermine you making it harder for you to achieve what you’d like to?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be hiding your light so to speak. And you may be interested in understanding more about what you’re doing and why.
I know about this from personal experience. It’s not a theory for me. In my corporate career – and without seeking it – I became the first woman on the board of Australia’s largest advertising agency. On the day I got that appointment, I thought I was going to be fired! I didn’t feel I deserved the role or that I could live up to their expectations. So, I didn’t deliver. Sure I put on a confident mask. I looked like I was handling things well, but that’s not how it felt at the time. Within 2 years, I walked away from the Agency to start my own business before they could fire me. I didn’t realise that I took the problem with me: me and the way I saw myself.
8 years ago. I discovered that these feelings of self-doubt had nothing to do with my capabilities. They related more to the belief I had formed that I just wasn’t as good as others were or as others thought I was. I also realised how stressed I was trying to look perfect and in control.
I don’t want others to go through the same experience. Instead, I want them to see themselves, recognise and accept both their magic and their wobbly bits (so to speak) and allow themselves to shine. None of us is perfect. We’re never going to be the perfect mother or father, daughter or son, friend, partner, sibling, boss, colleague. Never. None of us. We need to stop putting so much pressure on ourselves to achieve an impossible goal.
How would it be instead if we could see who we are and know that is enough? Each of us brings a unique combination of qualities, talents and skills that are valuable. Each of us can make a difference in a way that no-one else can. We all have our part to play.
